As of 2026, Michael Carey holds the position of Chief of Department and Director of Emergency Management. He was initially appointed as interim Chief in November 2023 and subsequently confirmed as Chief of Department in February 2024. Having dedicated over 35 years to the field, he began his professional journey as a firefighter in 1990. His career trajectory saw him promoted to Fire Lieutenant in 1998, Fire Captain in 2012, and Battalion Chief in 2016. He has fulfilled duties across all department divisions and held several administrative positions. In his capacity as incident commander, Chief Carey has overseen numerous emergency situations, encompassing structural fires, hazardous materials events, technical rescues, and marine incidents.
Chief Carey advocates for advanced education, holding a Bachelor of Science in Fire Science and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Anna Maria College. He further achieved the Chief Fire Officer designation via the CPSE accreditation program. Moreover, he champions professional development, having acquired numerous certifications from both the Emergency Management Institute and the National Fire Protection Agency.
